Heretic let you look up and down and they added weapon powerups that let you do some unique things.ĭuke 3D had all kinds of crazy weapons, it had rudimentary abilities to be able to do multi-floor buildings including a few levels which were almost completely vertical, it had semi-destructible terrain and objects, it had enormous boss characters (like 5-10x your size IIRC), and it just had fantastically good level design. Doom just had run around and shoot, open doors, warp pads, etc. Previous to Duke 3D you had Doom, Heretic, etc. Quake also really did not run on a 486 at all, and ISTR lots of people being pissed cause Pentiums were expensive. It came out 6-9 months before Quake IIRC. Quake had thrown all it's eggs in the "Full 3D engine" basket", Duke had stuck with a 2.5D ray tracing engine and stuck every little feature they could in.
